We’re pumping out one our biggest custom orders ever, thanks to one of our southeast distributors. This time with 68 four-wheel steer trailers to haul diesel turbocharger housings for a major engine manufacturer.

Uniquely designed, each trailer features two carousels that lock in place during transport and rotate to keep loads easily accessible. A single trailer holds 48 parts and about an hour of production needs on the assembly line.

With the added capacity of our new truck factory, we can handle massive orders like this with ease. Plus, we can build even larger carts and trailers faster than ever.

Here are the tech specs:

  • All steel four-wheel steer trailer with sheet aluminum carrousels minimize trailer weight and cost.
  • Custom removable superstructure mounted over channel frame base trailer. Designed to haul 48 parts in 12 by 12 lined cubby compartments. Special lining protects parts in transit. Adjustable shelves can accommodate part changes in the future.
  • Each rotatable carrousel is designed for water drainage through the cubby compartments, facilitating occasional wash down.
  • Rugged loop-type towing tongue with special handle for manual steering. Pintle hitch mounted on rear enables several trailers to be made into a train.
  • Fifth wheels at each end connect to a tie rod for four-wheel steering. Enables trains to “track” through aisles.
  • Running gear: Four W-1230-SPB ¾ Poly-Soft wheels with precision ball bearings for an extra-smooth ride and easy rolling.
  • Two front wheels have special contact brakes installed to maintain position at the assembly line.
  • Glossy yellow paint
  • Load capacity: 2,000 lbs.

The Belly of the Beast: “Big Blue” Trailer

4/25/2013 8:59 AM  RssIcon

With a load capacity of 30 tons, our “Big Blue” custom four-wheel steer trailer lugs Dow Chemical’s heaviest molds. But it’s more than an intimidating name and impressive strength. Custom-engineered running gear helps this giant easily navigate crowded factory floors.

Here’s how it works:

It Starts with Ultra-Durable Wheels

Big Blue rolls on eight dual-mounted press-on polyurethane wheels. Tapered roller bearings with floating spacer arrangement ensure proper preload on the bearing so it can handle years of abuse. A restrained axle and rugged fifth wheel add to its durability.

Linkage System: Perfectly Synchronized

When the front running gear turns left, the back wheels turn right, so it can make tight turns. To prevent any unnecessary stress on the trailer’s vitals, we built hard stops that allow it to turn at a predetermined amount.

A custom drag link made of heavy structural steel tubing minimizes the stress of hauling 30 tons. Plus, a drag link guard protects it from accidental forklift or crane damage.

Ready for Tow in Any Direction

With a loop-type towing tongue at each end of the trailer, the operators can pull it in any direction. A lock keeps either tongue upright when not in use. And with heavy-duty drawbar loop made of forged alloy steel, there’s no risk of the rig breaking away.

DFMA Principles Improve Rugged Workhorse Cart

9/12/2011 12:00 AM  RssIcon

Hamilton, OH, September 12, 2011:Hamilton Caster has been the perennial choice for premium quality long lasting platform trucks. The company is proud to re-introduce its highly popular model PB1108 2000-lb class platform truck. A Hamilton design team successfully implemented DFMA principles to its heavy duty design and a second Hamilton team implemented lean manufacturing process improvements to its methods and processes used to manufacture the cart in the USA. The sturdy all-steel frame remains intact, as does the kiln dried, premium quality hardwood deck which muffles noise and protects the load from damage. The cycle time to build the industrial cart has been reduced through the removal of wasted time, movements and resources making this cart efficient to manufacture. Better running gear has been added to improve the truck’s “rollability”. Using 8” x 2” premium moldon rubber tired wheels with ball bearings reduces the required starting forces by as much as twenty percent vs. most of its rubber-tired competitors making this wheeled cart a clear choice when ergonomics are factored into the buying decision. These premium wheels reduce operator fatigue and the related risk of an expensive back injury or other muscle strain. Through its lean initiative and continuous improvement policy, the company has been able to improve the product, lower the list price, and ship all models from the Hamilton, OH factory in as little as 24 hours.
